What Is Corning Gorilla Glass?

Gorilla Glass is a thin and tough protective layer on devices which have big screens like those in Tablets, Smartphones, TVs and other electronic devices. It reduces the possibility of breakage of screens on devices. Gorilla Glass was developed and manufactured by Corning in 2007.

Until 2010, 20% of Mobile devices, approximately 200 million mobile handsets used this technology and around 2012 the share rose to 50%. Now most newly developed Electronic Devices with Screens have Gorilla Glass. Corning Gorilla Glass is used by more than 30 major brands and has been featured in more than 750 product models, spanning over 750 million units worldwide. There are various other types of Glasses in the market but Gorilla Glass is :

  • Damage Resistible: It gives better damage resistance against flaws from the user’s end. It reduces the risk by creating a deep compression layer on the screen’s surface which is formed by chemical processes.
  • Hard: It is quite hard and can save your screen from damage.
  • Thin: Its thinness can vary between 0.5mm- 2mm according to the need of the manufacturer.
  • Lightweight: Its weight is similar to nothing.
  • Scratch Resistant: With all the above features it also protects your screen against scratches.

Corning Gorilla Glass

After its Gorilla Glass popularity, Corning developed Gorilla Glass 2 and announced it at CES this year with several improvements. New Glass 2 is 20% thinner and it enables the development of slimmer devices with greater touch sensitivity. It is the ideal option to use this unimaginative Glass from Corning  for the manufacturers of Tablets, Smartphones and Laptops . It provides brighter images without sacrificing its quality. Most big companies like HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony, etc use this technology. Samsung Galaxy S III also has Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
