Mythbuster: I have a high gpa and test score so I’m certainly getting into USC

The Myth: all of those other application doesn’t matter if i’ve A gpa that is high and score.

The Verdict: Nope.

‘It’s all about the numbers’ seems to unfortunately be something I hear a serious bit when folks explore college admission. I am made by it sad because that is wholly false when referring to the admission procedure at USC. Students, counselors and parents tend to get really anxious about GPAs and test scores.

GPAs and test ratings are essential, but they aren’t the only determining element in a pupil’s admission decision. A student deciding on USC will be automatically admitted never nor denied based entirely on GPA and test scores.

We’re to know a learning pupil the greatest we perhaps can through the admission procedure. GPAs and test ratings help us determine how well you are carrying out academically, but we would also like to make the journey to know you beyond that. Is the learning student challenging herself within the context of exactly what is available at her school? So how exactly does this connect with her standardized testing? There is not A gpa that is magic and rating combination to determine all this.

Admission to USC is competitive. They are numerous, many qualified pupils who are applying to USC. We do not have spots for them all within our incoming class. We use qualitative components such as task summaries, essays, and letters of guidelines to make distinctions among our numerous candidates that are excellent.

Whenever we wanted, we could simply take the best GPAs and test scores and acknowledge those students. Whenever we did that, we would admit a different course than the one we just enrolled. I also would n’t have job because a computer could do that. Our admission procedure is an individual one, and we are trying to bring a well-rounded course to USC. We aim to do this through the use of your application that is entire to just as much as we can about you.

A high GPA and test rating isn’t golden admission to admission at USC. We get beyond the true numbers, and now we wish you do too in the application.

Hello from one other side….

Interviews…another part associated with university application process. We’re currently finishing up our on-campus interviews through the end of November (Thanksgiving excluded.) You may additionally see us interviews that are conducting urban centers towards you throughout the United States. At this point in the process, it is possible you’ve already experienced a college that is few, and I’m sure at the end you left with either feelings of success, disappointment, excitement or a number of other adjectives which could describe the uncertainty that is an interview. Hopefully I can offer you a little insight into what we are thinking during those 30 minutes.

Our interviews generally last around 25 minutes and now we as admission counselors, invest afternoons, from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm, interviewing around five students. So, what’s actually going through our minds as soon as we sit back over the table away from you? Well, that largely varies according to you…

Are you visibly nervous? Sweating? About to break down in tears? In the event that response is yes, then I am most likely hoping that I’m able to help you to calm down. I will generally start off with questions that have clear cut responses: Tell me exactly what classes you might be taking this semester…What book are you reading in English right now? Students do not have to consider these questions, they already have the answers. Hopefully, this can help the person settle down, and we could have a relaxed conversation. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry, you are not the only one. Most of that time period students feel safe pretty quickly after they realize the true nature of the interview. The primary ideas I you will need to draw out from students are the following: 1) performs this person know why they’re deciding on USC? Can there be something particular they’ve seen here that is of interest to them? 2) Can this student think critically? Can they answer a concern that will require though or might not have an obvious solution? 3) Are they confident in their abilities and therefore are they sure they could succeed at USC? College is difficult so we want individuals who wish to be right here.

The vast bulk of my interviews get smoothly with really few bumps into the road. There are of course moments when I repeat myself because I can not remember if I’ve asked question with this interview, or the one right before it. Therefore in advance, please forgive me if we ask you the same question twice. My goal during an interview is to get a solid conversation going so it feel less like an interview, and much more like one person trying to get to learn another. So just come with a mind that is open greet us with excitement (hopefully genuine), and everything will go smoothly.
